Swedish black chicken was imported by seafarers from Mozambique to Norway and later to Sweden in the half of 17th century. There was crossed with local chicken breeds as well as was adapted to local harsher environmental conditions. Today it is recognized as distinct breed. It differs from other black chicken breeds (e.g. Kadaknath, Cemani chicken – Ayam Cemani, etc.). It is rarely kept outside of Sweden and Norway.
