Polish green-legged partridge chicken

Breed description

Polish green-legged chicken is similar to Czech chicken. It differs in the colour of the legs. Polish green-legged chicken has green legs, while Czech chicken has slate-gray legs. It is an old Polish chicken breed. Its ancestors were introduced to Poland from Italy in the 16th century. The first mention of the Polish green-legged chicken dates back to the end of the 19th century. From amongst several colour varieties the most popular, with partridge like feathers and reseda-green legs and beak, was chosen for further breeding in the 20th century. Polish green-legged partridge chickens have been maintained and bred in the south-eastern region of Poland (on the territory of the historical region Galicia in Eastern Europe) and were very popular because of their resistance to severe climatic conditions, excellent hatching and rearing abilities as well as of their disposition for good utilization of pasture. It became widespread across most of Poland during the 20th century. It is not suitable for keeping in large, overpopulated flocks or in cages. It was replaced by modern hybrid hens, which were introduced to Poland in the 1960s and 1970s, because they lay more eggs and are well adapted to intensive egg production in small cages. The population of Polish green-legged chickens decreased to about 11% in 1961 and to only 2% in 1973, being at the risk of extinction. Nowadays, it is again a widespread breed in Poland, especially on organic pasture-raised chicken farms.
